Message of the Minister of Justice on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Moldova joining the Council of Europe

On July 13, 1995, the Republic of Moldova, the first country from Commonwealth of Independent States, became a member of the Council of Europe - the most important European organization, accepting it’s basic principles - democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

By joining the Council of Europe, our country has signed and ratified multiple Council of Europe conventions, which are important achievements in adjusting national legislation to European standards and improving, in this context, the quality of life of Moldovan citizens. An ongoing important role plays the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which provided direct access to one of the most effective mechanisms represented by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

The Council of Europe, during the 25 years since the Republic of Moldova joined, continues to be a reliable partner, with a significant role in establishing and strengthening the rule of law, democracy and human rights.

Thanks to the Council of Europe’s support and expertise, today we can review the most important achievements, as well as the gaps for which joint efforts are being made, including the reform of the justice system.

I am confident that our important partnership with the Council of Europe will continue to have a major beneficial impact on the lives of people from country. Also, I mention that the Ministry of Justice will take all necessary actions to promote and implement the European reforms and standards.
