The Minister of Justice, Sergiu Litvinenco, had a meeting today with Mrs. Iulia Scântei, Head of the Legal Commission of the Romanian Senate. The discussions were also attended by Mr. Victor Chirilă, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Bucharest.
The officials discussed the reform of the judiciary and the fight against acts of major corruption in the Republic of Moldova, including the reorganisation of the institutional framework, but also about Romania's experience in these chapters. Mr. Sergiu Litvinenco breathed on the Ministry’s priorities as well as the measures initiated in this regard, referring, in particular, to the (draft) Law on verifying the integrity of candidates for membership in the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) and the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP), voted today by Parliament in second reading.
"In order to start the great cleaning of the justice system, it is very important to have integrity and courageous members in the SCM and CSP, who will support the reform of the judiciary and will not admit corrupt judges and prosecutors who also present integrity issues. It is an ambitious exercise, but it will set the tone for further reform, a long-awaited reform by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who want a justice system in which they have the certainty that their rights are not abusively violated ", underlined the Minister of Justice.
In her turn, Mrs. Iulia Scântei gave assurances that Romania will continue to support Moldova’s efforts to reform the judiciary and fight the major corruption. "I wish you best of luck. Count on our support on the road to justice reform, which is not easy at all ", mentioned the Head of the Legal Commission of the Romanian Senate.
In the end, the officials agreed on intensifying and consolidating the Moldovan-Romanian cooperation on the justice segment. In this context, Minister Sergiu Litvinenco thanked Romanian guest for the openness and continued support for the Republic of Moldova in consolidating the rule of law and its European course.
